Breaking: 22-foot Ganesha idol collapses in Mumbai, 2 killed; Five injured

Mumbai (Maharashtra), August 23, 2026: Two people were killed and five others injured after a 22-foot-tall Ganesha idol collapsed in Mumbai’s Bhuleshwar area late Saturday night.
The incident occurred around 10 pm while the idol was reportedly being transported from Lalbaug to Bhuleshwar.
According to a preliminary police investigation, the welding support at the rear of the idol broke around 50-60 metres before the pandal, causing the structure to lose balance and topple forward onto people nearby. The idol broke into three pieces following the collapse.
Five people, including two girls aged five and seven, were injured in the incident. Rescue teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, traffic police, BMC and 108 ambulance services reached the spot and launched rescue operations.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Two of them later succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and initiated further investigation into the incident.
