Kathmandu (Nepal), August 26, 2026: A massive flash flood swept through parts of northern Nepal on Wednesday morning, causing extensive damage in Rasuwa district near the Tibet border and affecting homes, vehicles, bridges and infrastructure projects, according to officials.
The flooding occurred along the Bhote Koshi River, with a sudden rise in water levels reported at around 9 am local time. Authorities said the floodwaters appeared to have entered the area from the direction of Tibet.
The border settlements of Timure and Syabrubesi were among the areas reportedly worst affected by the flooding. Videos circulating on social media showed powerful torrents of water sweeping through affected areas and causing damage to buildings, roads and other infrastructure.
The full extent of the destruction was not immediately known, while authorities were working to assess the situation and gather information from the affected areas. Casualties have also not yet been officially confirmed.
Officials are investigating the cause of the sudden flooding. One possibility being examined is a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), a phenomenon in which water from a glacial lake is suddenly released and can trigger severe flooding downstream.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of settlements and major infrastructure in the mountainous border region as authorities continue their assessment and response operations.
