Big Breaking: Earthen pot filled with old silver coins found during excavation in Mohali village; Treasure hunt continues till midnight

Mohali (Punjab), August 26, 2026: A discovery of a pot reportedly filled with old silver coins during excavation at the historic village of Gharuan in Mohali triggered excitement and drew crowds to the site on Tuesday, with a search for more coins continuing late into the night.
According to information available, construction of a modern library is underway at the site of the village’s old panchayat building. Workers were excavating the ground for the foundation when they reportedly came across an old, partially damaged earthen pot buried in the soil.
When the pot was taken out, a large number of old silver-coloured coins were reportedly found inside it, sparking speculation that the discovery could be linked to an earlier historical period.
Initial reports suggested that some of the coins carry inscriptions in Urdu. However, their exact age, origin, dynasty or historical significance has not yet been established and would require examination by experts.
Ward councillor Sher Singh said that after news of the discovery spread, residents gathered at the excavation site carrying torches and using mobile phone flashlights to search the area for more coins.
According to the councillor, some people allegedly took coins away from the site. The police were subsequently informed and reached the spot after the situation attracted a crowd.
Police reportedly cleared the area and took control of the excavation site to prevent further unauthorised digging and removal of any objects.
The exact number of coins recovered and their historical or monetary value remains unclear. Further assessment by the relevant authorities and experts is expected to establish the significance of the discovery.
