Amritsar, Punjab, September 1, 2026: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers staged a protest outside the residence of BJP Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh in Amritsar on Tuesday, objecting to BJP leaders visiting the residence of former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to offer condolences following his death.
Sajjan Kumar, a convict in an anti-Sikh riots case, died on August 20. The visit by BJP leaders to his residence has drawn criticism from AAP workers, who raised slogans against the BJP.
Heavy security was deployed outside Chugh’s residence in view of the protest to prevent any untoward incident.
Heavy police deployed outside the residence of Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh in view of the protest called by the Aam Aadmi Party. ADCP Harpal Singh says, "We have deployed force here—specifically near the residence of senior BJP leader Tarun Chugh—because members of the Aam Aadmi Party have gathered to protest against the BJP's leaders reaching Sajjan Kumar's residence. To maintain law and order, we have deployed a significant force: the operation is being supervised by the DCP (Law and Order), assisted by three SPs, three ADCPs, four ACPs, and approximately 100 personnel. If the law and order situation deteriorates, action will certainly be taken; no one will be permitted to take the law into their own hands. As for the duration, the event is scheduled to begin around 10:00 or 10:30 AM; we will assess the situation after that."
