Chandigarh, September 1, 2026: Several Punjab Congress leaders were detained by police on Tuesday while staging a protest in Chandigarh against the FIR registered against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with the Haldwani ‘purification’ controversy.
Punjab Congress Working President Raj Kumar Verka condemned the police action and alleged that Dalits were being subjected to lathi-charge.
“This is the ugly face of the BJP. And the way Dalits are being lathi-charged. This fight will continue,” Verka said.
The protest was held to oppose the FIR against Rahul Gandhi, with Congress workers raising slogans against the BJP-led government and demanding that the case be withdrawn.
