India’s book publishing market projected to reach Rs 2 lakh crore by 2030–31: Report

New Delhi, September 4, 2026: India’s book publishing market is projected to reach ₹2 lakh crore by 2030–31, reflecting the sector’s strong growth potential and its increasing significance to the country’s knowledge economy, according to the India Book Market Report 2026–2030.
The report, released by the Federation of Indian Publishers (FIP) in partnership with NielsenIQBookData, provides an assessment of India’s evolving publishing industry and examines the trends, opportunities and challenges shaping its future.
The report covers print, digital and scholarly publishing, while also examining the impact of education, research, Indian-language publishing, artificial intelligence, copyright, creator rights and policy frameworks on the sector.
According to the report, the projected growth highlights rising demand for books and publishing services and the potential of the industry to become a major contributor to India’s broader creative and knowledge-driven economy.
Vikrant Mathur, Executive Director, NielsenIQBookData, India & GCC, said the report was developed to provide a clearer understanding of the scale, structure and evolution of India’s publishing sector. He said it combines market data with industry expertise to provide insights into the trends, opportunities and challenges facing the industry.
Pranav Gupta, Vice President, Federation of Indian Publishers, said publishing was fundamental to India’s intellectual, educational and cultural progress. He stressed the importance of reliable data, research and evidence-based discussions as the industry continues to evolve.
Sanjay Kumar, former Secretary of Education, Government of India, described India as the world’s third-largest publishing industry after China and the United States, and said the country has the potential to become the largest. He also highlighted publishing as an important driver of the knowledge economy, human connection and innovation, and called for India to strengthen its position as a global printing hub under the Make in India initiative.
Yuvraj Malik, Director, National Book Trust, India, said India’s large reader and learner base, linguistic diversity and expanding technological capabilities give the publishing industry significant potential to emerge as a leading global knowledge economy.
The report has also received international recognition. José Borghino, Secretary General, International Publishers Association, welcomed the publication and underlined the importance of reliable industry data and statistics. He noted that the report covers print books, educational publishing, digital publishing and journal publishing, besides examining the likely direction of government policy.
The report further identifies opportunities for India to expand its presence in global academic publishing, while stressing the need for research quality and integrity, robust copyright protection and sustainable business models.
