Gulzar Singh cremated in Sangrur after family agrees to Govt job, compensation

Sangrur (Punjab), September 8, 2026: The last rites of Gulzar Singh, a resident of Toor Banjara village in Sangrur, were performed on Tuesday after his family reached an agreement with the district administration over their demands.
According to Gulzar Singh’s son, the cremation was carried out with the consent of the family after the government agreed to provide a government job to his younger brother and compensation to the family.
He said Sikh organisations also played an important role in facilitating the agreement between the family and the administration.
The cremation took place amid a heavy police presence at the village cremation ground. There were allegations that force was used to facilitate the cremation, while some people also reportedly attempted to disrupt the last rites. However, Gulzar Singh’s son clarified that the cremation ultimately took place with the family's consent following the agreement reached with the administration.
Gulzar Singh’s death had triggered considerable political controversy in Punjab. He had reportedly raised the issue of the alleged drug menace in his village during a public interaction involving Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema.
Gulzar Singh subsequently consumed Celphos and was admitted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMC), Ludhiana, where he died.
His death has led opposition parties to demand an independent probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Political parties have also raised questions over allegations made by the family and demanded accountability if any wrongdoing is established.
Earlier, a Punjab BJP delegation met Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and sought a CBI investigation into Gulzar Singh’s death.
The circumstances surrounding his death and the allegations raised in connection with the case remain under investigation.
