Kishau Project Deal Signed: Six states sign water, power-sharing pact; Haryana to get 1,280 cusecs

New Delhi, September 15, 2026: The long-pending agreement on the Kishau Multipurpose Project was formalised on Tuesday with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among six states — Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi.
The agreement was signed at Kartavya Bhawan-3 in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil. Chief Ministers Yogi Adityanath (Uttar Pradesh), Pushkar Singh Dhami (Uttarakhand), Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu (Himachal Pradesh), Rekha Gupta (Delhi) and Nayab Singh Saini (Haryana) were present at the event.
The MoU formalises the understanding reached among the states during a high-level meeting held in June and lays out the arrangements for sharing water and electricity generated from the Kishau Multipurpose Project.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini described the agreement as an important achievement for the state, saying the project had remained pending for years and was finally taken forward through dialogue, cooperation and consensus among the participating states.
Saini thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil for their efforts in building consensus and coordinating with the states and concerned departments.
According to Saini, Haryana has a 48 per cent share in the Yamuna and will benefit from the increased availability of water through the project. He said the Renuka Ji and Lakhwar projects are already under construction and work on the Kishau project is expected to begin soon.
The Chief Minister said Haryana’s combined water share from the three projects — Renuka Ji, Lakhwar and Kishau — would be around 1,143 million cubic metres (MCM). He added that the three projects together are expected to increase water availability by 2,676 cusecs, of which Haryana’s share would be around 1,280 cusecs.
Saini said the additional water would help meet Haryana’s present requirements as well as the needs of future generations.
During his interaction with the media, Saini also raised questions over remarks by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and alleged that Mann had disrespected the turban. Saini said Mann should visit Sri Akal Takht Sahib and apologise.
The Kishau Multipurpose Project is being developed as a major water storage and hydroelectric project on the Tons River, a tributary of the Yamuna. The agreement among the six states is expected to pave the way for further progress on the long-pending project.
