Breaking: Giani Harpreet Singh seeks SIT probe into Amarjit Chawla case, demands answers from SGPC

Amritsar (Punjab), September 21, 2026: Akali Dal Punar Surjeet president Giani Harpreet Singh has demanded a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the case registered against SGPC member Amarjit Singh Chawla, alleging that a woman was brought into the matter with an intention to damage his reputation.
Giani Harpreet Singh said the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj should answer questions surrounding the case and explain the circumstances in which the woman was allegedly brought into the matter.
He also demanded that SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami respond to the allegations. Giani Harpreet Singh said that if Dhami had no answers, he should resign.
According to Giani Harpreet Singh, the woman was allegedly brought in as retaliation for orders issued on December 2. He called upon the SGPC to clarify whether she had been brought in for this purpose.
He further said that the concerned Jathedar should also provide an explanation regarding the matter.
Giani Harpreet Singh also sought a response from the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, saying the party leadership should clarify its position on the issue.
Calling for an investigation by the Punjab government, he said an SIT should be constituted to examine the Chawla case and establish the facts surrounding it.
The demands came amid continuing developments in the matter involving Amarjit Singh Chawla. On September 20, Sri Akal Takht Sahib took disciplinary action against Chawla and Giani Malkit Singh following allegations made by a woman.
Giani Harpreet Singh maintained that the circumstances surrounding the case should be investigated by an SIT and that the SGPC and other concerned Sikh bodies should provide answers.
