Vehicles Without High-Security Registration Plates Will Not Get Petrol or Diesel in Amritsar

Amritsar, September 22, 2026: The Police Commissioner has issued strict directions regarding vehicle number plates in Amritsar. Under an order issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, vehicles without valid and clearly visible High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) will not be supplied petrol, diesel or CNG.
The order will apply to all petrol pumps, diesel dispensing stations and CNG stations falling under the jurisdiction of the Amritsar Commissionerate. Vehicles without front and rear number plates, or those having broken, bent, covered, altered or tampered number plates, will also be denied fuel.
According to the police, such vehicles may be used in criminal activities such as hit-and-run incidents, chain snatching, theft and robbery. Unclear number plates also create difficulties in CCTV-based identification and ANPR-based traffic enforcement.
All petrol pumps and CNG stations will be required to install information boards measuring at least 3x3 feet in both Punjabi and English. CCTV/ANPR cameras at the fuel stations must remain operational, and recorded footage of vehicles must be preserved for at least 30 days.
New vehicles with valid registration or temporary registration numbers have been exempted from the restriction. Ambulances, fire brigade vehicles and other essential emergency vehicles will also remain exempt.
Violators may face action under Section 223 of the BNSS and the Motor Vehicles Act.
