Breaking: SGPC ends Additional Head Granthi’s services, accepts Chawla’s resignation; 4-member panel formed

Amritsar (Punjab), September 22, 2026: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has taken departmental action in connection with the ongoing controversy surrounding SGPC member Amarjit Singh Chawla and allegations of sexual assault, accepting Chawla’s resignation and ending the services of Additional Head Granthi Malkit Singh with immediate effect.
SGPC president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said the decisions were taken in view of the action and directions of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
The SGPC has also constituted a four-member committee to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter. The panel comprises SGPC members Baldev Singh Qaimpuri, Gurmeet Singh Booh, Bibi Gurinder Kaur Bholuwal and Gurbakhsh Singh Khalsa. SGPC secretary Balwinder Singh Kalma will serve as the committee’s coordinator.
Dhami said the committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 days. He said the SGPC would hold another press conference after receiving the report and respond to questions from the media and the Sikh community.
Rejecting allegations being levelled against him, Dhami said he had no information about who brought the woman concerned, where she came from or with whom she arrived, and denied having any connection with the matter.
Dhami also appealed to the police to conduct an impartial investigation, stressing that the truth must come out without injustice to any party.
He said that until a court delivers its verdict or a charge sheet is filed, all sides have the right to present their respective positions. He added that the SGPC’s stated objective was to ensure justice in accordance with the law and religious principles.
