NCW Chairperson Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar hears domestic violence complaints; says women’s entry into smuggling Is wrong
Ferozepur, 24 September 2026: National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar undertook a field visit to Ferozepur, focusing on women’s safety, empowerment, access to justice and prevention of substance abuse.
At Government High School, Wahge Wala, the Chairperson interacted with students and faculty and urged them to view their border village not as the “last village of India, but the first village of India.” She encouraged students to take pride in their identity and pursue education, sports, skill development and constructive activities while staying away from drugs.
The NCW organised ‘She Serves’ at Genesis Dental College Auditorium, Ferozepur, with around 400 girls participating. Inspector Geeta Rana, BSF, and Inspector Sukhbir Kaur, SSP Office, Ferozepur, shared their experiences of service and leadership.
A programme on substance abuse and its impact on women and families was also organised with the participation of students, mothers and Anganwadi workers. Participants took the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan pledge.
During the Mahila Jansunwai, around 20 cases relating to domestic violence, child custody and other women-centric concerns were heard and addressed.
Smt. Rahatkar interacted with SHG women and beneficiaries of Government schemes, encouraging economic independence, entrepreneurship and greater awareness of available Government support.
A review meeting with the district administration and police was held in the presence of Smt. Deepshikha Sharma, Deputy Commissioner, Ferozepur, and Shri Bhupinder Singh, SSP, Ferozepur. The Chairperson emphasised timely updating of the SHe-Box portal, progress under Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat and strengthening of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. She also appreciated Punjab Police’s ‘Mahila Mitra’ initiative.
An NCW team also inspected Central Jail, Ferozepur, reviewing the welfare of women inmates and rehabilitation initiatives, including psychological support, skill training and constructive engagement activities.
The visit reaffirmed NCW’s commitment to grassroots outreach, women’s safety, access to justice and empowerment.
