Palampur (Himachal Pradesh), September 27, 2026: BJP MP Anurag Thakur has hit back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his allegations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission, saying the poll panel has already clarified its position on the issue.
Speaking to reporters in Palampur, Thakur alleged that Gandhi and other opposition leaders were questioning the electoral process and constitutional institutions without providing substantive evidence. He accused them of attempting to mislead the public through such statements.
Thakur said the Election Commission had already issued detailed clarifications on the concerns being raised over its functioning. He argued that allegations against a constitutional institution should be backed by concrete evidence.
The BJP MP also alleged that some opposition leaders were targeting constitutional institutions to deflect attention from their electoral defeats. He urged opposition parties to put forward their arguments on the basis of facts.
The remarks come amid an intensifying political dispute over the functioning of the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly accused the poll panel of irregularities and has demanded the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. The BJP has rejected his allegations as baseless.
On September 26, the Election Commission said decisions related to the SIR exercise in West Bengal, Bihar and other states had been taken unanimously, following a meeting attended by the CEC and the two Election Commissioners.
