Eight decades later, Gurbani music to resonate again at Birla House

New Delhi, September 29, 2026: Nearly eight decades after freedom fighter Bhai Sahib Jwala Singh of Thatta Tibba is said to have rendered heritage Gurbani Sangeet at Birla House following the death of Mahatma Gandhi, his family’s musical legacy will return to the historic premises on October 2, 2026.
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, a descendant of Bhai Sahib Jwala Singh will present Gurbani Sangeet at Gandhi Smriti, formerly Birla House, from 4:30 pm to 5:35 pm. The programme is expected to be attended by the President, Vice-President and Prime Minister of India.
The programme is being hosted by Vijay Goel, Vice-Chairman of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti.
According to family accounts, Bhai Sahib Jwala Singh rendered traditional Gurbani Sangeet compositions at Birla House for eight consecutive days in 1948 following Gandhi’s death, leading up to the Bhog ceremony. The ninth-day Bhog was subsequently held at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, the family said. Family elders have also recalled that Bhai Sahib performed Gurbani at the historic venue before a speech by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Nearly eight decades later, the family’s next generation will return to the same premises to present Gurbani Sangeet, an occasion the family described as a meaningful continuation of its musical heritage and its connection with India’s freedom movement.
The family also expressed gratitude to former Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Goel for hosting the visit to Gandhi Smriti.
For the family, the October 2 programme represents a link between its Gurbani musical tradition, the freedom movement and a significant chapter in India’s modern history.
