Chandigarh, October 12, 2026: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday said his government would pursue all legal and constitutional avenues to seek the release of Bandi Singhs, adding that he would take up the parole cases of Jagtar Singh Hawara, Paramjit Singh Bheora and Jagtar Singh Tara with the appropriate authorities.
During a meeting with representatives of the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha, Sikh organisations and farmers’ unions, Mann said the state government had assured the Centre and the Governor of Punjab that law and order would be maintained if Hawara was granted parole to meet his ailing mother. However, he said, the parole had not been granted despite these assurances.
“The Punjab Government will take responsibility for maintaining law and order in the state. We have also given an assurance to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in this regard, but the Central Government has still not granted parole,” Mann said.
The Chief Minister said even a few days of parole for Hawara could demonstrate how peace and communal harmony could be maintained in Punjab. He added that such a step could also help pave the way for the release of other Bandi Singhs.
Mann urged Sikh organisations to keep their struggle peaceful and within the bounds of the law. He also cautioned against attempts by certain groups to disrupt such movements and damage the image of the Sikh community.
On the parole cases of Bheora and Tara, who are lodged in Burail Jail, Mann said the matter fell under the jurisdiction of the Chandigarh Administration. He said he would raise the issue with the Governor of Punjab, who also serves as the Administrator of Chandigarh.
The Chief Minister asked Punjab Advocate General Maninderjit Singh Bedi, who attended the meeting, to examine the individual cases from a legal perspective to explore a possible resolution.
Mann said the state government was committed to pursuing an appropriate and speedy resolution, while respecting the constitutional and legal framework.
“The long-pending matter concerning Bandi Singhs must not be allowed to remain unresolved indefinitely,” he said, reiterating that his government would extend all possible assistance within its powers.
In a post on X, Mann said the meeting with representatives of the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha had focused on their demands and the government’s efforts to secure the early release of Bandi Singhs. He said the government was working towards a resolution and hoped for positive results.
The delegation included Sant Sewa Singh of Rampur Khera, Gurdeep Singh of Bathinda, Bhai Mohkam Singh, Gursewak Singh Kahaneke, Baba Bhupinder Singh and farmer leader Boota Singh Burjgil, among others.
Senior officials present at the meeting included Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha, Advocate General Maninderjit Singh Bedi, Additional Chief Secretary (Home Affairs) Alok Shekhar, Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) P.K. Sinha, Principal Secretary (Jails) Bhawna Garg and Special Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Kumar Amit.
