Jhota Murder Case: Action Committee demands CM Mann, Punjab DGP’s resignation, CBI probe
Babushahi Bureau
Mansa (Punjab), October 18, 2026: The Shaheed Bhai Parvinder Singh Jhota Insaaf Morcha has issued a strongly worded letter demanding the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav over the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa.
The action committee has also demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the murder and what it alleges is a nexus between drug traffickers, police personnel and political representatives in Punjab.
Jhota was shot dead on October 13, 2026, after he allegedly went to oppose the sale of intoxicating medicines at a medical store. The committee claimed that the incident was witnessed by people across Punjab through a Facebook Live broadcast.
In the letter, the morcha accused the government of initially describing the killing as a case of personal enmity and alleged that this had diverted attention from the circumstances surrounding the murder. These allegations have been made by the committee and have not been independently established.
The committee said elected representatives had a responsibility to demand accountability from the government over the killing of a person who had raised his voice against drugs. It criticised legislators for what it described as their silence on the issue.
Key Demands of the Action Committee
The morcha has placed several demands before the government, including:
- Resignation of the Chief Minister and Punjab DGP, taking moral responsibility for the incident.
- A CBI investigation into the murder and the alleged drug trafficker-police-political nexus.
- A post-mortem examination at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, by a panel of senior doctors, with the family’s consent.
- Dismissal of the two Station House Officers (SHOs) of Mansa, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and the drug inspector concerned.
- Installation of a statue of Jhota at the medical store where he was shot.
- Establishment of a trauma centre at Khiala Kalan in his name.
- Trial of the accused in a fast-track court and exemplary punishment if convicted.
- Government-funded treatment at a high-level medical institution for those injured in the incident.
The letter also raises concerns about the safety of people campaigning against drug abuse and calls for accountability from the authorities.
The demands reflect the action committee’s position. Further details about the government’s response to the demands were not available in the material provided.
