Donald Trump: You Are Mad and a Danger to the World ! .. writes Ujjal Dosanjh
Dear Donald Trump,
I had written the piece that follows this letter before your inauguration. Since then you have given me no reason to change my mind. Your inauguration speech was a long tirade-- directed at the open, progressive, immigrant friendly country of the world that you inherited --intended to chart for it a new timid, narrow, nationalistic, isolationist and authoritarian course. You couldn't stomach the fact that your inauguration crowd was far smaller than Obama's. There were probably many more demonstrators, in the Women's March against you following your ugly scream of a speech, than there were attendees at your oath ceremony. You complained about the 'lies' media told about the size of your crowd. When you couldn't accept the truth, your press secretary defended your lies as your "belief". On another of your lies your Counsellor Kelly Anne Conway advanced the theory of alternative facts in your defence; so much so that on Amazon, George Orwell's 1984 started selling like hotcakes. You must know, as someone said, you are entitled to your opinions, but not your own manufactured facts.
Much has happened since you took the oath of office. You have appointed an Attorney General of the USA a man whose appointment as a federal judge was once rejected by the Senate for having violated Blacks' civil rights as a state attorney general. And he has already rolled back the rights of the LGBTQ community. Your National Security Adviser (NSA) had to resign for lying to your Vice President regarding discussing with the Russian Ambassador lifting the Obama sanctions against Russia when Obama was still the President. Despite knowing that he had undermined a sitting President in discussions on your behalf with a foreign hostile power, you went ahead and appointed Mike Flynn your NSA anyway. What kind of a President-Elect knowingly condones undermining a sitting President vis-a-vis a foreign power? Obviously only an illegitimate President-Elect and President.
Under the pretext of arresting criminal illegal aliens your administration is rounding up frightened men, women and children and deporting them to Mexico, a country they haven't ever seen or been to for decades. You issued an Executive Order banning any Muslims from coming into the country from seven countries that didn't include the countries such as Pakistan or Saudi Arabia--the source of much terror including 9/11 and San Bardino. When the courts rejected your order you inelegantly attacked the independent judiciary for disobeying you --as if you had become a Hitler.
You have been denouncing any news you don't like as fake news. You brand all media that are even slightly independent and critical of you as "dishonest" and "enemies of people". Your White House excludes media outfits that you don't like. When first a democratically elected leader starts calling independent press "the enemy of people", the people should be legitimately concerned about the fascistic and dictatorial threat the leader may eventually pose. You are proving right those who argued that you didn't have the temperament to be President.
You appear to be literally mad. Many are calling you delusional. You have now said you won't attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner. It seems you are really bent upon picking a fight with the Press. Perhaps you are counting on the old adage of "not picking a fight with those who by ink by the ton" not being true in modern times because we live in the age of social and digital media. Think again. You didn't win a plurality of the Americans' votes in the election and right now you are much less popular than you were on Election Day.
On the Presidents' Day many Americans demonstrated in the USA holding banners that read "Not My President", "illegitimate president" and others. Lucky for me that you are not my President. But I feel sad for the US citizens because unfortunately you are theirs in fact and in law--until impeached, if the Republicans ever have the courage and the smarts to do so. Until then the whole world will uncomfortably watch, pray and hope that you will change for the better or be impeached.

Dear Donald,
You and your surrogates have been noxiously complaining that the US Democrats are raising the bogey of Russian hacking into the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to delegitimise your electoral victory and undermine your presidency. I am a citizen of the increasingly smaller world: A Canadian citizen living next door to your country-- an immigrant in Canada, originally from India. I am baffled how one undermines something already illegitimate. I thought I should let you know well before your swearing in that as far as many Americans and people across the world are concerned your Presidency is void ab initio. You are an illegitimate President-Elect; and you will be an illegitimate President. Stop complaining about it. Just grin and bear it.
And you may ask why?
Where do you want me to start?
For beginners, as one who had sought to undermine the Presidency of a duly elected Barrack Obama by leading the most disgusting chorus of the Birther Lie against the first black president in the history of the USA, you don't deserve to be the President, and that too as the standard bearer of the party of the slayer and abolisher of slavery, Abraham Lincoln.
You campaigned on "draining the swamp" of the rich and powerful in Washington. That appears to have been another one of your grotesque lies because your proposed cabinet is full of billionaires and multimillionaires quite at home, and used to swimming in the swamp of which they are an integral part.
Your electoral college victory was founded upon a campaign of hate and racism against Muslims and Mexicans that appealed to the latent racism of a significant section of white Americans still undoubtedly harbouring racism-- fear of the other--and economic anxieties afflicting them leading them to buy your snake oil of how everything will be fine when you ban all Muslims from entering the country, set up a mandatory registry for American Muslims, instantly deport 11 million Mexicans from the USA back into Mexico and build a wall on the border with Mexico. Time and again you told the American people that you will make Mexico pay for the wall. You are now asking Americans to pay for it to be reimbursed by Mexico at some point in the future. And Mexico has flatly rejected your suggestion. But it is good that it may be less than a wall; but still another lie.
To make matters worse you have told scores of other monstrous, consequential and inconsequential lies in your lifetime and in the campaign. So much so that it compelled James Warren writing in Vanity Fair to label you "the least honest politician alive". And Even after getting elected you haven't stopped lengthening the already too long a screed of lies.
I confess Hillary Clinton was not the greatest opponent you could have faced. She had excessive baggage from years of being in the public and political domains: the history the Clinton Foundation, her own emails from her time as Secretary of State and much more. According to the report of the US intelligence, in came the Russians with the clear intent to sow distrust in the US election process, hurt the Clinton candidacy and help yours, their preferred candidate. The Russians hacked the DNC and other Clinton related emails and conspired with the Wikileaks to strategically release such materials during the campaign. The drip-drip of the Russian hacked and Wikileaks released material effectively damaged Clinton's chances of beating you; Russia put its thumb on the scale to help you, their favourite candidate; you became Russia's "Manchurian" candidate. Russia didn't interfere with the voting machines or the tallying of the votes. But it certainly did interfere with and influence the election in your favour. With Russia's clear and covert help, you defeated Clinton.
There are as yet unsubstantiated claims that the Russians posses a dossier of compromising personal and other information on you with which, if true, you could be subject to blackmail endangering the national security of the United States of America. The intelligence chiefs felt the information, though unproven, was germane enough to their duty to protect USA and its government that they briefed President Obama and you on it. The briefing material was leaked but according to the intelligence chiefs not by them or their organisations. You had a hissy fit during what the Guardian described as a train wreck of a press conference and compared your intelligence chiefs to the Nazis. Such irresponsible conduct is more proof that you aren't fit to be the President of the most powerful country on earth.
Mind you, Russia isn't unique in the world in trying to subvert other nation's politics and governments. American governments have been no international angels. They have encouraged countless coups and revolts and interfered in elections all over the world. The governments your country helped come to power in other countries were equally illegitimate, be it the Shah of Iran, Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines or Augusto Pinochet in Chile.
Russian interference and influence in the US election in your favour, more than the lies and hate you spewed, has certainly meant the demise of your presidency's legitimacy at its very beginning. Your campaign of lies, hate and racism along with the well documented help you received from the Russians in damaging your opponent has made yours an illegitimate presidency.
But you, your supporters and surrogates argue the fact that you have been elected should be the end of discussion. I tend to agree; no matter how tainted, the election is over. And in any event a large segment of the American electorate has never been known to be well informed and aware: the late Gore Vidal once lamented, "Half of the Americans have never read a newspaper. Half never voted for President. One hopes it is the same half".
Unfortunately, the world is the poorer for having to live with your less than legitimate Presidency. So please do us a favour: Just grin and bear it.
PS:January 13, 2017, 3:10 PM: I had written this column several days ago for the Indian Express. I noticed they hadn't published it yet..So yesterday on January 12,I updated it to reflect the alleged infamous Russian dossier on Trump. The piece was published by the Express last night--over 12 hours ago. Subsequently I posted it on my own--this very-- site. Shortly afterwards and to my utter delight I watched Rep(D) John Lewis, a revered civil rights figure and close associate of the late Dr. Martin Luther King state in an interview today that as far as he was concerned Trump will never be a "legitimate President". I was afraid of being lonely and ridiculed when I had written it. Therefore it was gratifying to be reaffirmed in my own conviction and that it is OK to say it out loud.
