Mera Khazana: Congratulations to Meera Gill on her election to Surrey City Council....by Baljit Balli
Heartiest congratulations to Meera Gill, a public servant, social activist in Canada, and a good acquaintance of mine, on winning the Surrey City Council election in British Columbia by a handsome margin. My warmest wishes to her as she begins a new innings in the game of life!
I first met Meera many years ago in Chandigarh, when she visited India and then Punjab as an important member of Gurdeep Bhullar’s theatre group. Her performance on stage captivated almost the entire audience, including me.
Since then, whenever I visited Canada, I would often meet Meera at gatherings of friends, conferences or social functions. She has a warm and cheerful personality that makes her pleasant company.
My last meeting with her was in 2018, when Sanjha TV Canada, led by Bill Sandhu, and Babushahi Network organised a public interaction at a hall in Surrey. As a well-known personality in Surrey and someone I knew personally, Meera Gill was also among those invited. The photograph shared with this write-up was taken on that occasion.
Even after that meeting, Meera continued to keep me informed about her activities. She had also added my name to her friends list. During the COVID-19 pandemic and in the period that followed, she undertook several commendable initiatives. We published reports about some of these activities on our digital news network and shared them with our readers.
When Meera entered the electoral contest for Surrey City Council, I learnt about her candidature through WhatsApp messages from her. I sent her my best wishes and sincerely hoped she would win.
Now Meera Gill has become a city councillor. Once again, my heartfelt congratulations to her on this achievement and my best wishes for this new chapter in her life. I hope she will continue to make a distinct mark in her new journey of public service.
