Banned items flood Ferozepur Jail, 9 Mobiles, tobacco seized in raid
Ferozepur, March 9, 2025: In a recent security operation at Ferozepur Central Jail, authorities confiscated 9 mobile phones and 1 sachet of loose tobacco from six under trial prisoners. The search operation, conducted between February 27 and March 9, 2025, aimed to curb the increasing smuggling of banned items inside the prison.
As per the reports, 170 mobile phones and various intoxicant substances, during search operations from time to time, have been confiscated in the first two months of this year alone, and 26 mobiles have been recovered during March, including the recent seizure. Last year, 510 mobile phones and other prohibited items were seized, indicating a persistent problem of smuggling contraband into the jail.
The inmates found in possession of the contraband have been identified as Manjeet Singh, Punjab Singh, Tarn Taran, Sarabjit Singh, Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan Masih, Gurmanpreet Singh, and Jaswinder Singh.
The repeated recovery of mobile phones and banned substances in the Ferozepur Central Jail has raised serious concerns about internal security lapses and possible collusion. The easy availability of mobile phones allows inmates to stay connected with the outside world, potentially engaging in illegal activities and threatening law enforcement efforts.
To curb smuggling and unauthorised communication inside prisons, authorities need to implement: Frequent surprise checks and enhanced electronic surveillance, Jamming devices to block mobile signals within prison premises, Stringent screening of visitors and jail staff to prevent contraband entry Deployment of body scanners and CCTV monitoring at high-risk zones, Strict legal action against those involved in smuggling banned items into prisons.
With continuous seizures highlighting an organized network of illegal smuggling inside jails, authorities must adopt zero-tolerance policies to prevent further breaches. Investigations are ongoing with Sarwan Singh, IO, to trace the source of these illegal items and hold those responsible accountable.
