Breaking: HC quashes FIR against Sukhpal Singh Khaira

Chandigarh, September 16, 2026: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has quashed an FIR registered against senior Congress leader and Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, bringing an end to the criminal proceedings arising from the case.
The order was passed in petition CRM-M-53987-2025, with neutral citation 2026:PHHC:131619, after the court considered Khaira’s plea seeking quashing of the FIR.
Khaira had challenged the criminal case before the High Court, contending that the FIR was politically motivated and lacked a sustainable legal basis. After hearing the parties and examining the material on record, the court allowed his petition and quashed the FIR.
The court held that continuation of the criminal proceedings would amount to an abuse of the process of law, thereby granting relief to the Congress MLA.
