Breaking: Sai Majra Shop Demolition Row; MP Malvinder Kang calls GMADA a ‘Hub of Loot’, Seeks CM’s Action

Mohali (Punjab), August 26, 2026: Anger has erupted among shopkeepers in Sai Majra village near Mohali following demolition action carried out by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) in the area. The affected shopkeepers have launched a protest against the government and GMADA administration, alleging that their establishments were demolished unfairly.
Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha MP Malvinder Singh Kang visited the site to meet the protesting shopkeepers and express solidarity with them.
Speaking to the media, Kang launched a sharp attack on the GMADA administration, alleging widespread corruption in the authority and describing it as a “hub of loot”. He alleged that the administration was selectively taking action against small shopkeepers while allowing establishments belonging to influential people to remain untouched.
Kang said that after receiving calls from local residents on Tuesday, he had spoken to the GMADA chief and made it clear that if action was required, it should be carried out uniformly against all shops, or no shops should be demolished. However, he alleged that GMADA officials proceeded with the demolition of shops belonging to economically weaker people while citing orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The MP further alleged that certain GMADA officials leave shops belonging to influential persons untouched in exchange for bribes, while small shopkeepers and daily-wage workers, who depend on their businesses to support their families, face action.
Kang said he also spoke to GMADA Chief Administrator Sandeep Rishi at around 11 pm on Tuesday and warned that officials must operate strictly within the framework of the law.
Appealing to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann through the media, Kang said that while the state government was undertaking various initiatives for the welfare of ordinary people, alleged corruption within agencies such as GMADA was damaging the government’s image.
He demanded the immediate transfer of officials and clerical staff who, he alleged, had remained posted in GMADA for a prolonged period. Kang also announced that a large-scale protest and gherao of the GMADA office would be organised soon against what he described as “high-handedness” towards poor shopkeepers.
