Abohar, July 8, 2025 –
Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar has said that fear of gangsters is rapidly eroding public confidence in the state government, particularly among the business community. Speaking during a protest held under the banner of “Funeral Procession of Law and Order in Punjab” following the murder of Abohar-based trader Sanjay Verma, Jakhar warned that traders now feel safer complying with ransom demands than relying on police protection.
“This government has lost the trust of the people. There is growing disillusionment with its false promises and tall claims. Punjab today longs for law and order like Uttar Pradesh,” Jakhar said, addressing a large gathering at Bhagat Singh Chowk.
Braving extreme heat and humidity, thousands of people gathered for over an hour to protest against the deteriorating security situation in the state. They raised slogans denouncing the state government and demanding action against rising crime.
Jakhar said Sanjay Verma’s murder symbolized not just the loss of an individual but the complete collapse of law and order in Punjab. He said the incident had instilled deep fear in the trader community and sent shockwaves across the region.
Recalling promises made by political leaders after visiting Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s memorial at Khatkar Kalan, Jakhar said, “Those who once vowed to wipe out drugs and crime are now presiding over a state where narcotics have entered every home and gang violence is rampant.” He cited four major shooting incidents reported in Punjab in the past few days alone.
Jakhar also expressed concern over youth being drawn into the gangster culture, often under the influence of drugs and social media. “Our youth are roaming with weapons instead of books or tools of employment. What kind of future are we building?” he asked.
He urged the youth of Punjab to reject the dangerous path of violence and choose a future rooted in dignity and hard work. “We must not follow failed Delhi models. The need of the hour is strict action against gangsterism and effective youth engagement strategies,” he said.
