Khamano (Punjab), July 13, 2025: A fresh controversy has erupted in Lakhanpur Garchan Patti village under Khamano block of Fatehgarh Sahib district, where the village panchayat has passed a resolution demanding the eviction of migrant families allegedly residing there without any identification.
According to local villagers, around 200 migrants, including children, elders, and youth, have been living for the past 2–3 years in makeshift shelters on Forest Department land near the village.
The villagers claim these migrants have no valid ID proof, refuse to share their background, and often roam the area in a state of intoxication.
“We asked them where they came from, but no one has ever disclosed any details or shown any documents,” said a villager. “Their presence makes us feel unsafe, and there are rising concerns over potential incidents involving theft, drugs, or other crimes.”
The panchayat has given the migrants a week's time to vacate the premises, citing safety and legal concerns.Additionally, the villagers have appealed to the district administration to investigate and take appropriate action against those living illegally without verification.
