Punjab Govt to expand Mohali Spinal Injuries Centre; Rs 3 crore sanctioned for second floor construction

SAS Nagar (Punjab), March 13, 2025: Punjab Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development, Dr. Baljit Kaur, has announced a major boost for the Regional Spinal Injuries Centre in Mohali, reinforcing the Punjab government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure.
During her visit to the facility today, she assured the immediate release of ₹3 crore for the construction of a second floor, increasing the centre’s bedding capacity.
Speaking at the centre, which receives ₹2 crore in annual financial aid from the state government, Dr. Baljit Kaur praised the institution for its specialized treatment of spinal injuries under the leadership of renowned spinal surgeon and Project Director, Dr. Raj Bahadur.
The facility serves patients from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh, performing around 50 spinal and urological surgeries per month and handling an OPD of 100 patients daily.
Government Support & Expansion Plans
Dr. Baljit Kaur stated that her visit aimed to identify areas for improvement through discussions with Dr. Raj Bahadur, medical staff, and patients.
She acknowledged the request for increased financial assistance and assured that the enhancement of the existing ₹2 crore grant is under active consideration by the Punjab government.
During her inspection of the X-ray and MRI rooms, ICU, and High Dependency Unit, the minister lauded the centre’s affordability compared to private hospitals and appreciated the dedication of the medical team in providing quality care to patients.
A Centre of Excellence for Spinal Treatment
The Regional Spinal Injuries Centre, Mohali, has emerged as a leading facility for spinal trauma and rehabilitation in North India. Apart from Dr. Raj Bahadur, the centre now benefits from the expertise of Dr. Vidur Bhalla, a former Head of Urology at GMCH-32, Chandigarh.
Interacting with patients, Dr. Baljit Kaur took direct feedback on the quality of treatment and facilities, reaffirming the government's focus on delivering world-class healthcare.

The minister was accompanied by Madhu Puri (Deputy Director, Technical Facilities), Amarjit Singh Bhullar (Deputy Director, Department of Social Security), DSP Ajit Pal Singh, Tehsildar Gurwinder Kaur, and District Social Security Officer Amrit Bala.
With the new expansion plans in motion, the Punjab government aims to further elevate the Regional Spinal Injuries Centre as a premier healthcare institution for spinal treatment and rehabilitation.
