Chandigarh, June 12, 2026: Punjab Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Friday announced a major urban infrastructure push across the Tricity’s peripheral towns, unveiling a series of development projects aimed at improving roads, water supply, sanitation and civic amenities in Kharar, Zirakpur, Derabassi, Nayagaon, Banur, Kurali and Gharuan.
Reviewing the progress of ongoing works with Executive Officers at Municipal Bhawan, the minister directed officials to adhere strictly to project timelines and ordered weekly reviews to ensure timely completion of development works.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Bains said that more than 250 kilometres of roads are currently under construction across the seven municipal councils. He added that several major road corridors will also undergo beautification to enhance connectivity and improve the urban landscape.
"Road infrastructure is being strengthened on a large scale across these towns. Alongside construction works, key road corridors will be beautified to provide better mobility and improved civic infrastructure for residents," the minister said.
To strengthen drinking water infrastructure, Bains announced the installation of 50 new tubewells across the urban local bodies. The proposed installations include 15 tubewells in Kharar, 10 each in Zirakpur and Nayagaon, five in Derabassi, four in Lalru, three in Banur and one in Kurali.
He also said that large-scale sewer desilting operations are underway to improve sanitation services and prevent waterlogging during the monsoon season.
The minister directed municipal authorities to commence work within the next 15 days on several key road projects, including Hospital to Tepla Road in Banur, Railway Road, Main Bazaar Road and Badali Road in Kurali, Ambala-Chandigarh Road towards Singhpura and High Ground Road in Zirakpur, Hospital Road and Main Airport Road near Gopal Sweets in Kharar, Haibatpur Road in Derabassi, Kroran Road and Nada Road in Nayagaon, and Banur to Jalalpur Road and ITI to Koulimajra Road in Lalru.
Stressing accountability, Bains warned that delays in project execution would not be tolerated and said officials would be held responsible for missing deadlines.
"We are monitoring every kilometre of road, every tubewell and every project deadline. Weekly reviews will be conducted and strict action will be taken against officials responsible for unnecessary delays," he said.
Highlighting the state government's development agenda, the minister said the focus is on building durable and future-ready urban infrastructure rather than temporary solutions.
He asserted that the Bhagwant Mann Government is committed to delivering transparent, time-bound and transformative governance through sustained investment in urban development projects across Punjab.
