SGPC condemns action of Nanded Police to seize Sikh weapons

Chandigarh/Amritsar, May 31, 2026: Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has strongly condemned action of Nanded Police in Maharashtra to seize Sikh weapons.
In a statement issued here, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami said that Nanded Police has taken action without due regard to Sikh religious traditions which has created resentment among members of the Sikh community
He said that though every citizen is bound to follow the law, but police also must respect the religious sentiments, code of conduct and historical traditions of the Sikh faith.
It is worth mentioning here that
a search operation was conducted by Nanded police on May 6 in areas under the Vazirabad and Itwara police station limits, during which 4,796 sharp-edged weapons, including swords and daggers, were seized.
Police officials have claimed that these weapons were largely used for ceremonial purposes by the Sikh community but there was over stocking of large quantities of weapons and these were without adequate safety measures and audit mechanisms.
Nanded SP Abinash Kumar disclosed to the media that the operation was launched after police had apprehended a man during a vehicle-checking drive and recovered a sharp-edged weapon from his possession. He said that after that investigations was conducted which led to the recovery of thousands of weapons from different locations.
