New Delhi, 16th January 2025 – The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has announced a series of nationwide protest actions in support of their demands, including a call for a Kisan Mahapanchayat in every state. These measures aim to urge the Union Government to address the long-pending issues raised by farmers, such as Minimum Support Price (MSP) and loan waivers.
In the context of Jagjit Singh Dallewal's fast-unto-death protest at the Khanauri border, which has now entered its 52nd day, SKM is intensifying its efforts to pressurize the government to hold talks with Kisan organisations and withdraw the National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing (NPFAM).
At a meeting of the National Coordination Committee (NCC) held on 15th January 2025, SKM decided to write a letter to the Prime Minister, stressing the urgent need to save Dallewal’s life and address the farmers' concerns.
Key Announcements by SKM:
-
Statewide Kisan Mahapanchayats:
SKM will organise Kisan Mahapanchayats in all states. The respective State Coordination Committees (SCCs) will convene to decide dates and venues. A massive Kisan Mahapanchayat has already been scheduled for 11th February 2025 in Patna, Bihar, which will be attended by the NCC leadership.
-
Meeting with Chief Ministers:
SKM delegations will meet Chief Ministers, urging them to adopt resolutions in their respective Assemblies to:
- Reject the anti-farmer, anti-federal NPFAM.
- Write to the Prime Minister to hold immediate talks with Kisan organisations.
- Take necessary steps to save Dallewal’s life.
-
Kisan Dharna on 20th January 2025:
SKM has called for a one-day dharna on 20th January 2025 (or another suitable date as decided by the SCCs) outside the residences/offices of Members of Parliament. The aim is to urge MPs to pressurize the Prime Minister to act on the farmers' demands.
-
Village Campaigns and Torchlight Processions:
Farmers have been urged to organise week-long campaigns in villages, along with Kisan rallies and torchlight processions. The exact dates will be decided by the SCCs.
-
26th January Parade:
Central trade unions have extended their support to the farmers' movement, with workers set to join the Tractor/Vehicle/Motorcycle Parade on 26th January 2025, coinciding with Republic Day celebrations.
Background
The SKM continues to push for the government’s engagement on critical issues such as MSP, loan waivers, and the repeal of NPFAM. The organisation has also emphasized the need for immediate action to save the life of Jagjit Singh Dallewal, whose protest has drawn widespread attention to farmers' grievances.
The farmers' movement remains united and determined to ensure that their voices are heard at both state and national levels.
