Sunam-Patiala Highway Renamed as Shaheed Udham Singh Highway; ₹85 Crore Development Projects Laid Foundation at Native Town

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Aam Aadmi Party National Convener Arvind Kejriwal paid heartfelt tribute to legendary martyr Shaheed Udham Singh on his 86th martyrdom day during a state-level function held at Sunam. The leaders also jointly laid the foundation stone for development projects worth approximately ₹85 crore aimed at giving a major facelift to Shaheed Udham Singh’s hometown.
At the Udham Singh Memorial in the local stadium, both dignitaries laid floral wreaths honoring the martyr’s supreme sacrifice. They recalled how Udham Singh bravely avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O’ Dwyer, one of the key orchestrators of the tragedy. The leaders emphasized that his fearless act significantly contributed to India’s freedom struggle by challenging British imperial rule and that his legacy will continue to inspire generations of youth towards selfless national service.
In a major move to honor Udham Singh’s memory and accelerate local development, the Sunam-Patiala Highway has been officially renamed as Shaheed Udham Singh Highway.
As part of the comprehensive development package totaling around ₹85 crore, several key projects were inaugurated, including:

Upgradation of Tehsil Complex (₹15.32 crore): This project will be completed within one year and will consolidate offices such as SDM, Sub-Registrar, Tehsildar, Treasury, Food Supply, State Tax, Cooperative Society, among others, in a modern facility.

New Bus Stand (₹13.64 crore): Equipped with bus counters and an integrated shopping complex, this bus stand will serve as a major transit hub, slated for completion within one year.

Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School (₹8.20 crore): To be built within nine months, this new school building aims to enhance education infrastructure for girls in the region.

Indoor Sports Complex (₹18.95 crore): Featuring facilities for synthetic track, badminton, boxing, judo, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, and taekwondo, the complex will promote sports and fitness among youth.

Shaheed Udham Singh Government College Development (₹20.78 crore): Work includes construction of Astro Turf hockey ground, lecture halls, library, administration block, and other essential infrastructure, targeted for completion within one year.

Basic Infrastructure Improvements in Sunam City (₹8.49 crore): Additional work to upgrade roads, public utilities, and civic amenities.
The Chief Minister and Arvind Kejriwal underscored their government’s commitment to holistic development that honors legendary martyrs by improving the quality of life and opportunity for residents of their native places.
This initiative reflects a blend of heritage preservation and modern infrastructure development aimed at ushering in sustained progress and prosperity for Sunam and Punjab at large.
