Two adulterators fined Rs 2.5 Lakh; Food Safety Team collects 6 samples during festive checks
Ferozepur, October 16, 2025: Acting under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and following the directions of the Punjab Commissioner, Food and Drug Administration, strict action was taken against two traders for adulteration in food items. Adjudicating Officer-cum-Additional Deputy Commissioner Major Amit Sareen imposed a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh in two separate cases.
Food Safety Officer Dr. Sarabjit Kaur informed that a sample of khoya barfi collected on January 24, 2024, from Gobind Ram, son of Rameshwar Lal, near Amritsar Gate, Ferozepur City, was found substandard. He was fined Rs 1.5 lakh. In another case, Vijay Kumar, son of Darshan Lal of M/s Bawa Sweet, Mallanwala Road, Ferozepur City, was fined Rs 1 lakh after the sample of khoya barfi collected on October 11, 2023, failed the test.
Meanwhile, keeping the festive season in view, Designated Officer (Food Safety) Dr. Amarveer Singh Sidhu and Food Safety Officer Dr. Sarabjit Kaur led a team to conduct inspections at various sweet shops in Ferozepur city and Guru Har Sahai. Six fresh samples of food items were collected to prevent the circulation of spurious products.
Shopkeepers were instructed to maintain strict hygiene, use only quality raw material, and ensure workers wear clean uniforms, gloves, and caps. Their licenses and registrations were also checked, and they were directed to prominently display license/registration numbers on bills. In addition, shopkeepers were warned to use only permitted food colours. Some sweets with non-standard coloring were destroyed on the spot.
The officials emphasized that these checks aim to ensure that residents get hygienic and quality sweets during the festive season.
