Two arrested within hours over provocative wall slogans in Amritsar

Amritsar (Punjab), September 27, 2026: Commissionerate Police Amritsar has arrested two men within hours of receiving information about provocative and objectionable slogans allegedly written on walls at different locations in the city.
Police said the wall writings included slogans such as “WELCOME AMBASSADOR GOR — BUT PUNJAB IS NOT INDIA,” “TRUMP–AMERICA — KHALISTAN ZINDABAD” and “PUNJAB HUL KHALISTAN.”
Police also said that Gurpatwant Singh Pannun subsequently released a video on social media referring to the wall writings.
Following the information, police teams launched an investigation to identify those allegedly responsible for the writings. The two arrested accused have been identified as Mangal Singh, 26, a resident of Wariyam Singh Colony near Khazana Gate, Amritsar, and Arshdeep Singh, 23, of Wariam Singh Colony on Chabal Road.
According to police, Mangal Singh works as an auto driver and has studied up to Class 11, while Arshdeep Singh is a labourer and has studied up to Class 8.
Police said the investigation has so far indicated that Arshdeep Singh was allegedly in contact with a foreign-based handler identified as Gora.
A case has been registered as FIR No. 142 dated September 26, 2026, under Sections 196(1), 197(2) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station A Division, Amritsar.
Police said further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events, ascertain the motive, examine the alleged foreign-based contact and identify any other persons who may have been involved.
The arrests were made under the guidance of Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav and on the directions of Amritsar Commissioner of Police Harmanbir Singh Gill.
Commissionerate Police Amritsar said attempts to disturb public order or create tension through provocative material would be dealt with in accordance with law.
