Union Cabinet discusses heatwave crisis; PM Modi calls for ‘Whole-of-the-Nation’ action
New Delhi, May 27, 2026 (ANI): Narendra Modi on Wednesday stressed the need for a “whole-of-the-nation” approach to tackle the ongoing heatwave situation as the Union Cabinet reviewed measures aimed at protecting citizens from extreme temperatures sweeping across several parts of the country.
The issue was discussed during a Cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, where ministries deliberated on steps to provide relief through coordinated action involving the health, water resources and disaster management sectors.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Centre is focusing on citizen safety and preparedness amid rising temperatures.
He said ministries discussed department-specific measures to minimise the impact of the heatwave and ensure adequate facilities for people affected by the severe weather conditions.
Vaishnaw said the Prime Minister emphasised that challenges of such magnitude require cooperation between the Centre, state governments and citizens alike.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi urged people to take precautions against the scorching heat, advising citizens to stay hydrated, carry water while stepping outdoors and regularly check on elderly family members and neighbours.
The Prime Minister also appealed to people to keep bowls of water outside homes, shops and offices for birds and animals struggling in the extreme heat.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several regions across central and northwest India are likely to continue experiencing heatwave to severe heatwave conditions over the next three to four days.
The weather office said severe heatwave conditions were reported in parts of Chhattisgarh, while isolated areas in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh also witnessed extreme temperatures. Heatwave conditions were additionally recorded in parts of Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
The IMD further warned that Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are likely to continue witnessing heatwave conditions over the next two days.
Authorities have advised people to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during afternoon hours, remain hydrated and seek medical assistance immediately in case of heat-related illnesses.
