Chandigarh,March 19, 2025: Former Minister and senior BJP leader Laxmi Kanta Chawla has written a letter to the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, regarding the complete removal of Sanskrit from government schools in Punjab.
She highlighted that even government-aided schools lack Sanskrit teaching facilities, leading to the abolition of Sanskrit teacher posts and leaving students with no option to study the language at the college level.
Chawla expressed concern over the diminishing presence of Sanskrit in universities, allegedly attributing it to the Punjab government’s 25-year-long efforts to phase out the language.
She warned that distancing students from Sanskrit means disconnecting them from their cultural roots, sacred texts like the Vedas, Puranas, Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, and Ramayana, which are integral to India’s heritage.
Emphasizing the importance of preserving Sanskrit, she urged the Education Minister to direct the Punjab government—and other states—to reinstate Sanskrit education and make it a compulsory subject up to matriculation. She called for immediate action to safeguard Sanskrit, describing it as the "soul of India."
