Nayagaon/Chandigarh, March 19, 2025 – The Punjab Forest and Wildlife Department has withdrawn its proposal to expand the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) from 100 meters to 3 kilometers, informing the Supreme Court that the limit will remain at 100 meters for Nayagaon Municipal Committee.
The decision was met with jubilation in Nayagaon, where residents and activists celebrated the victory with dhol beats outside Gurudwara Barh Sahib and Shiv Mandir. Vineet Joshi, senior BJP leader and chairman of the Nayagaon Ghar Bachao Manch, hailed the decision as a win for the people of Nayagaon, Kansal, Karoran, and Nada.
Several prominent figures joined the celebrations, including BJP Mohali District Secretary Bhupinder Bhupi, MC Surinder Koshish Babbal, MC Pramod Kumar, MC Babloo Lori, Mazdoor Sena leader Madan Lal, Brahma Kumari Nayagaon Chief Gyaan Chand Bhandari, Mithlanchal Chhath Puja Samiti leader Kameshwar Shah, and Gau Sewa leader Sushil Rohilla.
Joshi revealed that since November 2024, the movement had organized 24 nukkad sabhas (street meetings) and staged a protest march to the residence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwan Singh Mann, demanding the rollback of the ESZ expansion.
"The Punjab government was ultimately forced to bow to the people's will. This decision brings relief to over 2 lakh residents who would have been affected by the proposed expansion," Joshi stated.
The Nayagaon Ghar Bachao Manch has vowed to continue advocating for residents’ rights and ensuring that future policies consider the welfare of the people.
