Sri Muktsar Sahib (Punjab), May 31, 2025: In a tragic and explosive incident, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the deadly blast at an illegal firecracker factory in Fatuhiwala village, located in Punjab’s Sri Muktsar Sahib district.
The blast resulted in five fatalities and left around 30 people injured, including women and minors.
Those arrested include Tarsem Singh, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, his son Navraj Singh, and a labour contractor, Raj Kumar. Tarsem Singh’s wife, Sukhchain Kaur, who is also named in the FIR, is currently absconding.
The factory is said to have been operating illegally, without the necessary approvals. Although an application for official permission had been submitted, it had not been granted.
Despite this, the operations continued, reportedly employing around 40 workers in two shifts, many of whom were migrant labourers from Uttar Pradesh and lived onsite with their families.
The Lambi Police Station has registered a case under:
- Sections 105, 18(2), 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)
- Sections 9 and 12 of the Explosives Act, 1884
- Section 98 of the Factories Act
In a surprising development, the usually vocal Muktsar District Police, known for regular press releases and updates, have remained silent on this issue—possibly due to the involvement of a ruling party member. No official statement or media release has been made, despite the scale and seriousness of the tragedy.
When contacted, SSP Akhil Chaudhary confirmed the arrest of the three accused but refused to comment further, abruptly ending the call when asked for an official statement.
Authorities say a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to identify any other individuals who may be involved.
