Power Sector Employees, Engineers and Pensioners to launch statewide agitation from Jan 2
Babushahi Bureau
Patiala (Punjab), December 24, 2025: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Power Sector Employees, Engineers and Pensioners has announced a statewide agitation beginning January 2, 2026, in protest against what it termed as a series of anti-employee and anti-public sector measures taken over the past two months.
Addressing the media, JAC leaders Avtar Singh Kaith, Amandeep Jehlvi and Jatinder Garg said the struggle will begin with zonal dharnas across Punjab.
The first protest will be held in Amritsar on January 2, followed by Bathinda on January 6, Patiala on January 9, Ludhiana on January 15, and Jalandhar on January 20. A massive dharna is also planned outside the Powercom head office in the last week of January.
The leaders warned that if the Punjab Government fails to take corrective measures, all employees, officers and engineers of the power sector will proceed on collective leave as part of the agitation.
They said this is the first time that engineers, employees and pensioners have come together under a single Joint Action Committee to lead a united struggle. The JAC is opposing the proposed sale of power corporation land, alleged hurdles in setting up two 800 MW units at the Ropar Thermal Plant, and attempts to implement the Electricity Amendment Bill, 2025.
Several organisations, including the PSEB Engineers Association, Council of Junior Engineers, Bijli Mulamzad Sangharshish Morcha, Pensioners Association, IT Officers Association, HR Officers Association and Accounts Association, have jointly decided to fight on these issues.
The JAC leaders said safeguarding the public power sector is not only the responsibility of employees but also of the common people of Punjab. They added that as per the decision taken in the United Kisan Morcha meeting held on December 14, 2025, farmer organisations will also participate in the agitation.
Appealing to the Chief Minister, the Joint Action Committee urged the state government to immediately intervene and protect the public power sector in the larger public interest.
