Newspapers unsafe for food packaging and serving, warns FSSAI

New Delhi, June 8, 2026: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed all food business operators to immediately discontinue the use of newspapers for packing, wrapping or serving food, warning that the practice poses significant health risks to consumers.
The advisory was issued by FSSAI’s Western Region following a recent incident in Mumbai in which a street vendor was found using newspapers to pack food items. The matter prompted joint action by the FSSAI and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
According to the food safety regulator, printing inks used in newspapers may contain harmful chemicals, including lead and other heavy metals, which can migrate into food and adversely affect human health over time.
The authority also highlighted that newspapers are often handled and stored in unhygienic conditions, increasing the risk of contamination and foodborne illnesses.
Referring to the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018, FSSAI reiterated that newspapers and other non-approved materials are strictly prohibited for storing, wrapping, packing or serving food.
The regulator has directed street food vendors, restaurants, cloud kitchens, caterers and all other food business operators to use only approved food-grade packaging materials.
FSSAI has also appealed to consumers to remain vigilant and avoid purchasing food items served or packed in newspapers or other unsafe materials.
