Dalit Arson Case: National Commission of SC steps in, gives SSP Tarn Taran 7-day deadline
Babushahi Bureau
Tarn Taran (Punjab), June 8, 2026: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has issued a final seven-day ultimatum to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Tarn Taran, seeking an action-taken report in connection with an alleged arson attack on a Dalit family's residence in village Voin Poin.
The Commission's directive follows a complaint pursued by former Khadoor Sahib MLA and Shiromani Akali Dal Vice-President Ravinder Singh Brahmpura.
In its second and final reminder issued on June 8, the NCSC expressed concern over the alleged failure of district police authorities to respond to earlier notices sent on April 20 and May 7 regarding the case.
The complaint was filed by Dalbir Kaur, a widow belonging to the Scheduled Caste community, in connection with FIR No. 0167 registered on April 1, 2026.
Reacting to the Commission's intervention, Brahmpura alleged that the victim family had been subjected to injustice and claimed that the incident reflected misuse of political influence against marginalized sections of society.
He stated that the NCSC, under Article 338 of the Constitution, possesses powers similar to those of a civil court and stressed that any compromise allegedly obtained from the victim family under pressure would have no legal validity.
Brahmpura welcomed the Commission's action and said it would strengthen accountability within the administration. He reiterated his commitment to pursuing the matter until the affected family receives justice and any compensation due under the law.
The NCSC has directed the Tarn Taran police to submit a detailed report within seven days, failing which further action may be considered under the Commission's statutory powers.
The case continues to be monitored by the Commission.
