Workers Killed, Several Injured

Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), June 8, 2026: At least eight workers were killed and several others sustained serious burn injuries after molten steel at a temperature of nearly 1,600 degrees Celsius spilled during operations at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh on Monday.
The tragic accident occurred in the plant's SMS-2 and STC-3 units while routine production activities were underway. According to preliminary reports, a suspected technical malfunction caused a large quantity of molten steel to erupt from the production line, engulfing workers stationed nearby.
Eyewitnesses said the incident triggered panic inside the facility as workers rushed to safety following a powerful blast and the sudden release of superheated molten metal.
Emergency response teams, including plant authorities, firefighters and disaster management personnel, rushed to the site shortly after the incident. The injured workers were shifted to nearby hospitals, where several are reported to be in critical condition.
Police officials told news agency PTI that the molten steel involved in the accident had a temperature of around 1,600°C, leaving little chance of survival for workers caught in its path.
Expressing grief over the tragedy, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to provide all possible assistance to the affected families and ensure the best medical treatment for the injured.
The Chief Minister reviewed the situation with senior officials and instructed the administration to coordinate relief and support measures without delay.
Following the accident, operations in the affected section of the steel plant were suspended, and a detailed investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the mishap. Initial indications point to a technical fault, though officials said the precise circumstances would become clear only after the completion of the inquiry.
The incident has once again raised concerns over industrial safety standards at heavy manufacturing facilities, particularly in high-risk sectors such as steel production.
One of India's major steel-producing units, the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant employs thousands of workers and plays a key role in the country's steel industry.
