Nawanshahr (Punjab), June 19, 2026: In a major initiative to promote sustainable agriculture and strengthen grassroots participation in farm reforms, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Langroya, under the aegis of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, and ICAR-ATARI, organized a Sarpanches, Zila Parishad Members and Farm Innovators Sammelan at the Block Development and Panchayat Office (BDPO), Banga.
The convention was held as part of the ongoing district-wide ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’, aimed at encouraging balanced fertilizer use, improving soil health and promoting natural farming practices among farmers.
Banga MLA Dr. Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi attended the event as the chief guest. The Sammelan witnessed enthusiastic participation from Sarpanches, Panches, Zila Parishad members, progressive farmers and agricultural experts from across the district.
Welcoming the participants, Dr. Lekh Raj, Chief Agriculture Officer, outlined the objectives of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan and stressed the importance of involving local governance institutions in promoting environmentally sustainable farming practices. He urged village representatives to act as ambassadors of agricultural reform at the grassroots level.
The programme highlighted the collaborative efforts of various agricultural institutions and agencies working to support farmers through scientific guidance and access to quality agricultural inputs.
Among those present were Dr. Lakshman Das, Block Agriculture Officer; Dr. Vijay Mehashi, Agriculture Welfare Officer; Dr. Kawaldeep Sangha from ATMA; Baljinder Singh, General Manager, Markfed; and representatives of National Fertilizers Limited (NFL).
Delivering a technical session, Dr. Pardeep Kumar, Associate Director (Training), emphasized the importance of balanced fertilizer application in paddy cultivation. He cautioned farmers against excessive use of urea and other nitrogen-based fertilizers, stating that overuse not only increases production costs but also makes crops more vulnerable to pest attacks.
He encouraged farmers to adopt the scientific 4Rs principle of nutrient management — Right Source, Right Rate, Right Time and Right Place — for achieving better productivity and environmental sustainability.
Speaking on soil health management, Dr. Jaswinder Kumar, Assistant Professor (Agronomy), highlighted practical methods for preparing farm-based bio-inputs and adopting non-chemical approaches to weed and pest management. He said such practices help maintain soil fertility while ensuring sustainable crop production over the long term.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Rajinder Kaur, Assistant Professor (Home Science), showcased the various skill-development and vocational training programmes being conducted by KVK Langroya. She underlined the growing opportunities in food processing, value addition and agri-based entrepreneurship, particularly for rural youth and women.
The Sammelan concluded with an interactive session during which village leaders and farmers shared experiences, challenges and success stories from their respective areas. Experts from PAU and KVK responded to their queries and provided practical solutions on issues ranging from crop management to sustainable farming techniques.
The event reaffirmed the commitment of agricultural institutions, local bodies and farmers to work together in advancing the objectives of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan and ensuring a more sustainable and resilient farming future for Punjab.
