Chandigarh, June 19, 2026: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia on Friday defended his visit to a police station in connection with Akali supporter Joban Singh, asserting that his actions were aimed solely at protecting the human rights of a party worker whose family feared he could be implicated in false cases or subjected to a fake encounter.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Majithia alleged that the Punjab Police had illegally detained Joban Singh and claimed that he intervened after the latter’s family expressed concern over his safety.
The SAD leader said a case had been registered against him for allegedly tearing official documents and brandishing a pistol after he exposed what he termed the AAP government’s actions by locating Joban Singh at the residence of a Station House Officer (SHO).
Maintaining that his intentions were bona fide, Majithia pointed to court observations declaring Joban Singh’s arrest illegal and said strictures passed against DSP Kamalpreet Singh vindicated his stand.
Presenting videos related to the incident, Majithia alleged that police officials initially failed to provide clear information about Joban Singh’s whereabouts to his family members. He further claimed that despite assurances from police that no additional cases would be filed against Joban Singh, fresh charges, including an alleged illegal weapons recovery case, were subsequently registered against him.
“The family feared these developments could lead to further victimisation, which is why we reached the police station to secure his release from what we believed was illegal custody,” Majithia said.
The SAD leader also questioned the police investigation, alleging that authorities had failed to produce CCTV footage to substantiate the allegations levelled against him and other Akali workers.
During the press conference, Majithia also launched a fresh attack on Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the ongoing controversy surrounding alleged sacrilegious remarks and the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
Referring to statements allegedly made by the Chief Minister’s former wife, Majithia claimed they raised questions about an audio recording linked to the controversy. He accused the Chief Minister of disrespecting Sikh religious institutions and challenged his stance towards the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
“History shows that those who challenged the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib ultimately faced consequences,” Majithia said.
The AAP government has not yet responded to Majithia’s latest allegations.
