Punjab Assembly: MLA Kulwant Singh seeks implementation of Gurdwara Relocation Agreement over Airport Road Safety concerns

Chandigarh, August 3, 2026: Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh on Monday raised the long-pending issue of relocating Gurdwara Mata Sundari from the Airport Road in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, urging the state government to honour an earlier agreement with the Gurdwara management and provide alternative land for the shrine.
The issue was raised during Question Hour on the opening day of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha’s Monsoon Session. Kulwant Singh sought clarification from Punjab Housing and Urban Development and Revenue Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian on the government’s stand regarding the relocation of the Gurdwara and the implementation of the previously agreed rehabilitation package.
Addressing the House, the MLA said the Gurdwara, managed by the Budha Dal Samparday under the leadership of Baba Balbir Singh, is located in the middle of the Airport Road, a major route connecting Mohali with Chandigarh International Airport.
He said a detour was created around the shrine when the road was constructed nearly 14 years ago, resulting in four sharp turns along the busy stretch. According to the MLA, the curves have become a major road safety concern and have led to several accidents over the years.
Kulwant Singh said hundreds of people had been injured and nearly 50 to 60 people had lost their lives in accidents on the stretch since the road became operational.
The MLA informed the House that the government had earlier reached an agreement with the Gurdwara management for the relocation of the shrine. Under the agreement, the management was to be allotted three acres of alternative land for the construction of a new Gurdwara, along with financial assistance of Rs 2.93 crore for rebuilding the religious structure.
He said this was the second agreement reached between the government and the Gurdwara management, reflecting the willingness of both sides to find an amicable solution.
However, Kulwant Singh expressed concern that the earlier agreement had not been implemented. He said the Gurdwara management had recently received a notice regarding the cancellation of the proposed land allotment and had been asked to hold fresh discussions for a new agreement.
Urging the government to honour its earlier commitment, the MLA called for the relocation process to be expedited to address the hazardous road alignment.
Responding to the issue, Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian assured the House that the matter would be resolved. He said the government was committed to finding a mutually acceptable solution while safeguarding public interest and respecting the sentiments of the Gurdwara management.
