Channi Says Congress Begins ‘New Chapter’ from Land of Martyrs
Ferozepur, August 3, 2026: Former Punjab Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi on Monday attended the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected Ferozepur Municipal Council president Ashok Sachdeva.

MP Sher Singh Ghubaya and former MLA Parminder Singh Pinki and a large number of Congress leaders and workers were present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Channi said Congress was beginning a “new chapter” from the land of martyrs, Ferozepur. Taking a dig at the Aam Aadmi Party government, he alleged that elections to various committees had been conducted through “force and irregularities”. He announced that if Congress returned to power in Punjab, elections to such committees would be annulled and held afresh.
Channi also criticised the state government over the alleged use of force against employees protesting for their demands. He claimed that sanitation workers, MGNREGA workers, Anganwadi and ASHA workers, electricity board employees and other sections of employees had faced police action during their agitations.
He said Congress would stand with the protesting employees and asserted that those responsible for allegedly assaulting them would be held accountable if Congress formed the government.
Referring to the late Punjabi singer-politician Sidhu Moosewala, Channi described him as his “brother and friend” and said Congress continued to stand with his family. He also said the party would continue to raise issues concerning Punjab’s youth.
Meanwhile, the event also triggered fresh discussion about alleged factionalism within the Congress. The photograph of Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring was conspicuously absent from the flex board installed on the stage. Pictures of senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa and Ferozepur District Congress president Kulbir Singh Zira were also missing.
When questioned about the absence of the senior leaders’ photographs and alleged factionalism within the party, Channi appeared to avoid giving a direct answer.
The ceremony marked the formal installation of Ashok Sachdeva as president of the Ferozepur Municipal Council. Bohar Singh and other newly elected office-bearers were also congratulated by the Congress leadership.
After the Ferozepur programme, Channi also shared a social media post congratulating Ashok Sachdeva and thanking Congress workers for “hoisting the Congress flag” in the land of martyrs. He described the function as more than merely an assumption-of-office ceremony, calling it the beginning of a “major political change” in 2027. He said restoring Punjab’s lost glory by defeating “anti-Punjab forces” was the party’s sole objective.
