Kharar (Punjab), August 23, 2026: Kharar Police have arrested the main accused in the murder of government school headmaster Gursewak Singh at Delhi airport, marking a major breakthrough in the case.
The accused, identified as Sartaj, was detained at the Delhi airport on Friday evening after a Look Out Circular (LOC) had been issued against him following the incident. Police had received information that he was attempting to flee to Canada.
Acting on the LOC, the Delhi airport authorities detained Sartaj. A Kharar Police team subsequently reached Delhi and formally arrested him at around 3 am on Saturday.
The accused was brought to Kharar and produced before a court, which sent him to four-day police remand.
During preliminary questioning, Sartaj allegedly told police that Gursewak Singh had been harassing his wife. He claimed that he had gone to confront and warn the headmaster over the issue. According to the accused, the confrontation escalated into a physical altercation, during which Gursewak Singh sustained serious injuries.
Sartaj has reportedly denied having any intention to kill the headmaster.
The incident dates back to August 5, when Gursewak Singh was allegedly attacked with sharp-edged weapons and an iron rod in Sunny Enclave, Kharar. He was critically injured and admitted to Greciaan Hospital in Mohali, where he succumbed to his injuries on the morning of August 8.
During the police remand, investigators are expected to question Sartaj about the circumstances surrounding the attack, the alleged motive and the possible involvement of other persons in the case.
