Breaking: Giani Harpreet Singh writes to Amit Shah, seeks NIA-ED probe into drugs, gangsterism in Punjab

Chandigarh, September 16, 2026: President of the Akali Dal Reformed, Giani Harpreet Singh, has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking a high-level investigation into drug trafficking, gangsterism and alleged political patronage in Punjab.
In his letter, Giani Harpreet Singh expressed concern over what he described as the worsening drug situation in the state and urged the Centre to intervene.
He called for an impartial and detailed investigation into the alleged drug trafficking network in Punjab. He claimed that the nexus between drug traffickers, gangsters and political figures providing alleged patronage should be investigated by central agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Border Security Force (BSF).
Giani Harpreet Singh said the drug problem was not only affecting young people but was also damaging Punjab's social and economic fabric. He further argued that, as a border state, disrupting drug supply networks in Punjab was important from a national security perspective.
The Akali Dal Reformed leader also raised the issue of alleged religious conversions in the state and sought a high-level inquiry into reports of such activities. He said that if people were being converted through force, inducement or deception, those involved should face legal action under applicable laws.
Giani Harpreet Singh urged the Union Home Minister to consider the issues raised in his letter and take appropriate steps to address concerns related to drugs, organised crime and alleged illegal activities in Punjab.
