Chandigarh, September 23, 2026: The exit of Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring from the post has now become certain, and the name of the new state Congress president is likely to be announced within the next day or two.
According to reliable Congress sources, the party high command conveyed a message to Raja Warring last night itself that a new Punjab Congress president would be appointed and that he would be accommodated in an important position in the party.
There is a strong possibility that Raja Warring himself may have sent his resignation to the high command, following which the way would naturally be cleared for the appointment of a new state president.
Among the names being discussed for the new president, that of former MP and former minister Vijay Inder Singla is reportedly the most prominent. However, Pargat Singh, Partap Singh Bajwa, Rana K.P. Singh and some other names are also being discussed. It appears that this time the high command is consulting senior Congress leaders before appointing the new president.
At the same time, changes in the organisational structure of the Punjab Congress and in the committees constituted for the 2027 Assembly elections are also likely.
After Sachin Pilot was appointed Punjab Congress in-charge, Charanjit Singh Channi and other leaders who had turned dissident had apparently remained calm because they had been given an indication that Raja Warring would soon be replaced and a new state president appointed.
