Relief for Trident Group: SC Dismisses PPCB’s SLP Challenging HC Verdict in Trident Pollution Case

New Delhi, September 30, 2026: The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), challenging a Punjab and Haryana High Court order in a case involving Trident Limited.
A three-judge Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justices V. Mohana and Joymalya Bagchi declined to entertain the plea and refused to stay the High Court order pronounced on May 8, 2026, in the case relating to allegations of pollution.
The PPCB had filed the SLP seeking to set aside the May 8, 2026, order. However, the Supreme Court declined to interfere, dismissed the SLP and disposed of the pending interlocutory applications.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal and his team appeared for the PPCB, while Senior Advocates Mukul Rohatgi, Maninder Singh and Munisha Gandhi represented Trident Limited.
The dispute relates to action taken by the PPCB against Trident Limited’s industrial units at Dhaula in Barnala district in the month of April 2026.
Trident subsequently approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the notices. The company alleged that the notices had been issued in violation of the principles of natural justice and contained predetermined conclusions regarding alleged environmental violations.
Trident had also alleged that the proceedings were politically motivated and linked the action to its founder-chairman Rajinder Gupta joining the BJP Parliamentary Party. The allegation was disputed by the PPCB.
