In a significant step towards mending strained bilateral relations, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have agreed to appoint new High Commissioners and restore full diplomatic services for citizens in both countries.
The breakthrough came during a bilateral meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Alberta on Tuesday afternoon. Prime Minister Carney had extended a formal invitation to Prime Minister Modi to participate in the summit.
This high-level dialogue marks a potential reset in India-Canada relations, which had hit a low point during the tenure of former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, following diplomatic tensions over the Khalistan issue.
The restoration of regular consular operations is expected to ease travel, trade, and educational exchanges between the two nations, benefiting thousands of Indian and Canadian citizens alike.
