Chandigarh, March 24, 2024: Targeting Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar on Sunday said Bhagwant Mann was forced to finally visit families impacted by the Hooch tragedy only after learning that Sunil Jakhar was going there today.
"Bhagwant Mann and finance minister Harpal Cheema have lost all moral authority to remain in office after presiding over the deaths of innocent citizens. They have no time for poor families who have lost their loved ones today because of AAP's illegal and unconditional patronage of the liquor mafia in the state. The CM is more concerned about the fate of Kejriwal, already in dock for his role in the Delhi Excise Scandal," Jakhar said here while meeting affected families in village Gujran which has seen several deaths already.
Assuring the families whose plight he said was unbearable, Jakhar said he would urge the EC to grant special permission for allowing the state government to immediately disburse maximum compensation to the victims of this man-made tragedy. "I won't let CM and his government-run away from providing due monetary relief to all of them on the pretext of Code of Conduct, Jakhar said.
"Precious lives have been lost which could have been saved and both CM and FM are directly responsible for these casualties", Jakhar said while terming the visit of both CM and FM as a mere formality on their part bereft of any sensitivity and morality.
"People told me affected family members were forcibly locked up in houses so they can't come in front of the media or meet the CM to narrate their ordeals. Some also told me that their sons have been booked by Police without any reason just to project police action on paper. People want a fair and transparent probe and BJP will keep up pressure on this government to ensure this government which is hands in glove with liquor mafia in Delhi and Punjab does not go scot free and is held accountable for lives lost," Jakhar said after speaking to ADGP Gurinder Singh Dhillon, in-charge SIT, over phone.
Expressing his gratitude to the State Election Commission for ordering probe in the Hooch tragedy after his request to the Commission yesterday, Jakhar said thorough investigation will lay bare nexus between AAP and liquor mafia ruling the roost in Punjab.
Reacting to a media question, Jakhar said the comments of Aman Arora reek of arrogance and insensitivity. His remarks actually reflect the mindset of AAP regime for which innocent people are only voters and their lives don't matter to them. What matters to AAP is how much money can they extort from Liquor Mafia by patronising liquor smuggling and give the same to Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi, Jakhar added.
Their primary responsibility is of maintaining law and order and safeguarding lives of citizens, which AAP has shamelessly abdicated, Jakhar further said.Jakhar was accompanied by former MLA and Core Committee Member Arvind Khanna.
