Lax security leads to surge in smuggling of mobiles, prohibited items into Ferozepur Jail
Ferozepur, September 11, 2024: Persistent security lapses in and around Ferozepur Jail have resulted in the continued smuggling of mobile phones and other banned items. Recently, nine unclaimed mobile phones, 41 bundles of ‘bidi’, and 61 sachets of ‘zarda’ were recovered after being thrown over the high prison walls.
Since the beginning of the year, over 350 mobile phones have been seized from the jail premises, along with various other prohibited items. Although there was a decline in smuggling during the election period due to heightened security measures, the issue remains unresolved.
Authorities suggest that enhanced security measures such as improved screening procedures, technology-assisted monitoring, aerial surveillance using drones, and better staff training could help curb the influx of contraband items. However, a staff shortage has made it difficult to monitor and prevent smuggling activities effectively, as well as to investigate mobile phone usage among inmates due to security concerns.
A case under Sections 42 and 52-A of the Prisons Act has been registered against unidentified individuals following a complaint by the Superintendent of Central Jail. Investigations are ongoing, led by Investigating Officer Sarwan Singh.
