Punjab to challenge Kishau project agreement in Supreme Court

New Delhi/Chandigarh, September 21, 2026: Punjab Government will challenge 422 MW Kishau Multipurpose Project in Supreme Court as Centre Government had neither consulted the state, nor it was taken on board before signing of agreement between six states on initiate of Union Government.
According to a report of The Tribune, a draft petition to challenge the agreement has already been drafted and will likely to be filed in the SC in new few days.
It is worth mentioning here that 422 MW Kishau project will be executed on Tons river a tributary of Yamuna. Project with a capacity of 1462 million cubic meters will provide irrigation, drinking and industrial water and generating hydro power.
It is also worth mentioning here that Punjab was awarded two third of Yamuna water in 1954 but later agreement signed between Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Himchal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh on May 12, 1994, Punjab was excluded from it.
Punjab’s contention is that new project cannot be finalised on the basis of Yamuna water sharing agreement of 1994 as state was excluded from it.
